Troja has begun implementing an innovative research project for the development of hybrid composites.

With the support of the Recovery Fund, SIA "Troja" has launched an innovative research project aimed at developing hybrid composites using a polypropylene (PP) matrix, lignin, and plywood sanding dust. The project will be implemented at the company’s production facility in Saulkalne, Salaspils Municipality, and will promote the creation of new, environmentally friendly materials that meet sustainability requirements and enhance the competitiveness of Latvia's woodworking industry.

The company’s CEO, Jānis Biķis, states: "Our goal is to develop high-quality materials that will not only reduce the use of fossil resources but also improve the durability of materials and encourage their application in various industries."

The project, which will run from October 1, 2024, to September 30, 2026, focuses on the development of a new hybrid composite material. This material will be suitable for plywood coating and will offer enhanced water resistance, significantly improving the properties of wood products. The project's goal is not only to improve the sustainability of products but also to reduce production costs.

The project will involve several research activities, including:

  • Investigation of optimal filler concentrations in polypropylene hybrid composites, compared to existing polypropylene materials.
  • Development of technological additives and extrusion parameters to ensure the material meets the highest standards.
  • Studies on plywood adhesion and aging resistance to create a material with improved mechanical properties and high surface hardness.

It is expected that the project's implementation will improve the company’s competitiveness, enabling it to offer innovative products with high added value and sustainability potential.

Founded in 1992, SIA "Troja" is one of the leading plywood processing companies in Europe. It specializes in birch plywood processing and the production of higher value-added products, such as rocking horses, office furniture, acoustic panels, and road signs. The company’s production facilities are located in Riga and Saulkalne.

The project "Hybrid Composites Based on Polypropylene, Lignin, and Plywood Sanding Dust: Production and Property Research" is supported by the European Union Recovery Fund. The research project is being implemented under SIA "VMKC" project No. 5.1.1.2.i.0/2/24/A/CFLA/004.
